The Issue: MHS Board Picking the Pockets of Poor Children

The MHS Board canceled governance reforms in 2003, freeing itself to engage in uncontrolled self-enrichment.  This is accomplished by having its members simultaneously appoint themselves to lucrative related company boards, that they also control.

Collectively, the eight MHS Board members receive $1,887,558 in total compensation for their Hershey Trust “charitable” board service.

Check out these total compensation figures for their "charitable" board service:

  • Board chairman Roy Zimmerman alone receives $503,833.
  • Board member Jim Nevels receives $430,500.
  • Board member Bob Cavanaugh receives $315,000.

Pretty good pay for running a charity, wouldn't you agree?

This self-enrichment produces similar out-of-control salary practices at the MHS administrative level.  For instance, last year, the MHS President, John O’Brien, received $673,867 despite being removed from his position.

Who can make the difference:

Only Attorney General Tom Corbett, who refuses to act, can compel the MHS Board to end this shocking self-enrichment.

How it can be done:

Pennsylvania voters, regardless of party affiliation, can deliver a strong message to Corbett, demanding action on behalf of needy children.  Corbett is running for governor in November, he should either fix these problems before the election or be held accountable in the voting booth.
