The MHS Board canceled governance reforms in 2003, freeing itself to engage in uncontrolled self-enrichment. This is accomplished by having its members simultaneously appoint themselves to lucrative related company boards, that they also control.
Collectively, the eight MHS Board members receive $1,887,558 in total compensation for their Hershey Trust “charitable” board service.
Check out these total compensation figures for their "charitable" board service:
- Board chairman Roy Zimmerman alone receives $503,833.
- Board member Jim Nevels receives $430,500.
- Board member Bob Cavanaugh receives $315,000.
Pretty good pay for running a charity, wouldn't you agree?
This self-enrichment produces similar out-of-control salary practices at the MHS administrative level. For instance, last year, the MHS President, John O’Brien, received $673,867 despite being removed from his position.
